History of the St. Joseph County Republican Women
In 1920, the 19th Amendment was ratified by 36 states and added to the Constitution. This amendment gave women in America the right to vote!!!
In 1936, a group of ladies in St. Joseph County gathered together to form one of the first female Republican organizations in the state of Indiana. The woman who was elected to serve as the first president was Ruth Means, mother of our own Judge Means. The women of Indiana formed the Indiana Federation of Republican Women two years later, in 1938. Later on, Indiana was the first state to join the new National Federation of Republican as soon as it was formed.
